Nigeria Immigration Service

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is the government agency charged with the responsibilities of border security and migration management in Nigeria.

The NIS was extracted from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in 1958 and formally established by an Act of Parliament, Cap I71, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria in 1963. It was granted para-military status in 1992 and the Immigration Act was passed into law on May 25th, 2015.

In due recognition of Nigeria Immigration Service’s adoption of global ICT operations in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, NIS was admitted into ICAO Board as the sole African representative in 2009.
