The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) was created as part of a colonial tax organisation under the name Inland Revenue Department of Anglophone West Africa. The department’s scope of administration covered Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and the Gambia.
Under the old structure as prescribed by the CITA, cap 60, LFN 1990a, the FIRS was an operating arm of the Federal Board of Inland Revenue (FBIR).
The FIRS is responsible for operating a transparent and efficient tax system that optimizes tax revenue collection and compliance.
